Meet the BLUES researchers: Davey Essers

Discovering sustainable solutions in marine biotechnology as a PhD candidate.

Meet the BLUES researchers: Davey Essers

Our colleague Davey began his academic journey in biotechnology at HAN University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. This field of study sparked his interest in the potential applications of biotechnology, leading him to pursue a master’s degree in the same discipline at Wageningen University & Research (WUR). During his master’s programme, both his internship and thesis concentrated on the biorefinery of seaweed, allowing him to explore the application of membrane technology for protein extraction from this marine algae.

After these enriching experiences, Davey’s motivation remains strong. He explains, “The BLUES project allows me to work with even more fascinating marine feedstocks. Additionally, I can continue my research on deep eutectic solvents and explore their potential as green extraction technologies.”

Currently, alongside the BLUES project, he is working on the biorefinery of bioactive compounds derived from marine invertebrate cell lines.
