Meet the BLUES researchers: Alice Bagnato

We continue to introduce our colleagues at the University of Genoa in the stunning Liguria region of Italy, where we were actually welcomed for our third General Assembly meeting last year. Today, we're telling you more about Alice Bagnato

Alice began her academic journey with a Master's degree in Applied and Experimental Biology (biosanitary curriculum) and completed her thesis at the same university. For this, she studied the anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing properties of the brown seaweed Ericaria amentacea extracts for applications in cosmetics. This experience is what propelled her to research further the extraction of bioactive compounds from marine resources and discover sustainable approaches for their recovery.

In our project, Alice focuses on the biomedical applications of marine sponges, with particular emphasis on the study of their three-dimensional structure and the characterisation of the sponge extracellular matrix under the supervision of Professors Pozzolini and Giovine. Her work aims to contribute to the development of 3D scaffolds for the sustainable culture of sponge cells.

Happy to have her on our team!
