Meet the BLUES researchers: Prof. Marco Giovine
Prof. Giovine is a senior researcher and full professor at the University of Genoa, working with us on studies aimed at characterising the structure and extracellular matrix of sponges and optimising sponge cell cultures.
If our team were a Hollywood production with scientists instead of actors, you could say we have a star-packed production on our hands! 😎
Exhibit A: Prof. Marco Giovine of University of Genoa, who has decades of academic work and research behind him adding up to a fantastic career in the field. His professional journey began with a degree in Biological Sciences, followed by a PhD in Biochemistry. Fast forward to today, Prof. Giovine has been a Full Professor of Molelcular Biology since 2024, after holding several academic positions within the university.
His research focuses mainly on marine molecular biology and marine biotechnology. For the latter, he has conducted several national and international research projects. With a scientific activity proven by more than 80 publications in peer-reviewed international journals, Prof. Giovine is also the co-inventor of several national and international patents in biotechnology, as well as co-founder of two university spin-offs.
Apart from these, Prof. Giovine has been President of a Master's programme in Food Biotechnology, Rector's Delegate for Student Orientation, and President of the UniGe Sea Study Centre, a strategic hub for advancing marine research and related initiatives.
In BLUES, Prof. Giovine is contributing to studies aimed at characterising the three-dimensional structure and extracellular matrix of sponges, as well as optimising sponge cell cultures.
